The yearly meeting between the SMC and Youth, Sport, Culture and Media Committee (YSCMC) in the Seychelles National Assembly took place on Thursday 19th of October. 

Under the guidance and Chairmanship of Honourable Wavel Woodcock, the meeting introduced the SMC representatives with the new members of the YSCMC followed by a recap of the words undertaken by the SMC since the two parties’ last meeting in 2021.

Following its review of the Newspaper Act in August of 2021, the CEO shared the issues identified and the proposals that the SMC is planning on tabling with the Minister for Information in the coming months. New opportunities that now calls for a third review of the SMC Act was also discussed. The SMC briefed the National Assembly Committee on the its review of the Code of Conduct and the way forward now that the review is in its final phase.   

The meeting also touched on the current status of the media database which the SMC is mandated legally to compile and the status of accreditation of journalists. Finally discussions took place of the works conducted by the SMC as part of the Media Freedom Coalition consisting of Commonwealth countries who signed the agreement in 2019.
